The main symptom for an Overactive Bladder (OAB) is urgency or having to rush to the toilet without getting enough warning. Urgency urinary incontinence can occur if you don’t reach the toilet in time. People with OAB have to empty their bladder more often than the normal 8 times in a 24-hour period and may need to get out of bed at night for the toilet.

OAB is an issue with the excessive triggering of the detrusor muscle which is the muscle in the wall of the bladder, giving the sensation that the bladder needs to empty.

Stress urinary incontinence affects more women and is usually a result of stretching or damage to the pelvic floor muscles with pregnancy and childbirth although can (less commonly) occur with obesity or other factors. The pelvic floor muscles are a sling of muscles that run between the tailbone and the pubic bone and support or ‘hold up’ the bladder and bowel, and in women, the uterus or womb.

Stress urinary incontinence occurs without warning when pressure is placed on the pelvic floor such as with coughing, laughing, sneezing, jumping.

People can have a combination of stress and urgency incontinence and in rare cases, other forms of incontinence.
